A recent study suggests that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
